AP 3-D Art and Design is a three-dimensional (3-D) art course that holds many similarities to the 2-D course. The course deals with 3-D artistic applications such as metalworking, sculpture, computer models, and ceramics. Like AP Studio Art 2D, the focus is on the design of the artwork itself as opposed to its composition. This is the deadline for AP Art and Design students to submit their portfolio components to the AP Program through the AP Digital Portfolio.

AP Art and Design Exam Guide

AP Art and Design skill categories delineate overarching understandings central to the study and practice of art and design. Each of the three skill categories consists of skills that encompass foundational to advanced learning over the span of the course. Students need to develop, practice, and apply these skills in a variety of contexts. Part B of the Breadth section delves deeper into the investigation of visual ideas. In addition to submitting 12 digital images, students must provide written documentation accompanying each image. This documentation should articulate the thought process, inspiration, and conceptual development behind each piece.

Once you join your AP class section online, you’ll be able to access AP Daily videos in AP Classroom. The AP Daily videos cover every skill outlined in the AP Art and Design Course and Exam Description. You can use these on your own for additional support as you prepare for your assessment task models. You’ll explore why and how artists and designers present their work to viewers. You’ll learn how artists and designers decide what to make and why and how to make it. These committees, made up of an equal number of college faculty and experienced secondary AP teachers from across the country, are essential to the preparation of AP course curricula and exams.

Build a Strong Portfolio:

Ultimately, an average score of 3 is passing, 4 is above average, and 5 is the best. Your AP coordinator will forward your completed portfolio to the AP Program by Friday, May 10, 2024 (8 p.m. ET). Those are AP Two-Dimensional Design (AP2D), AP Three-Dimensional Design (AP3D), and AP Drawing. All of these classes are typically year-long production classes revolving around a student-driven inquiry that is explored artistically. AP 2-D Art and Design deals with two-dimensional applications such as graphic design, photography, weaving, and collage. Contrary to AP Studio Art Drawing, focus is applied on the design itself instead of the composition of the artwork. Students are responsible for submitting their portfolio components as final in the AP Digital Portfolio by the May 10, 2024, 8 p.m.

Each of the three skill categories encompasses a range of skills, covering foundational to advanced learning throughout the duration of the course. Students are required to cultivate, practice, and apply these skills in various contexts. All AP Art and Design portfolios follow a two-section structure where you will demonstrate foundational knowledge and a range of understanding of visual methods. Each section is graded on a 5-point scale and contributes to the final portfolio score.

Develop 3-D skills in materials and processes, such as sculpture, architectural rendering and models, metal work, ceramics, glass work, and others. Skills 2 and 3 are specifically assessed in both portfolio sections (Sustained Investigation and Selected Works). Both sections of the AP Art and Design portfolio require students to submit writings about their work. Watch this recorded online event to learn about the role of written evidence in both the sections of the portfolio. The webinar includes a discussion of short reflective writing prompts that can help students document their thinking as their portfolios develop.

As always, you have the flexibility to organize the course content as you like. Make works of art and design by practicing, experimenting, and revising. Students upload images of their work over the course of the year, creating a digital portfolio. You’ll submit your portfolio digitally using the AP Digital Portfolio. Use the timeline to help you complete and submit your portfolio by the deadline.

Learn how project based AP courses take you beyond the textbook and into a world of learning through hands-on exploration. Below is an overview of the steps you’ll need to take to submit your AP Art and Design portfolio components to the AP Program through the AP Digital Portfolio. The college admission landscape is a constant source of frustration, confusion, and anxiety for students who are eager to make the most of their college experience. The AdmissionSight team is a specialist in the field that’s helped hundreds of students achieve their academic goals by getting into the universities of their dreams. Go to AP Central to review sample portfolios and scoring information from past years. If there is a wide divergence in the scores assigned by two readers to the same section of a portfolio, the section is forwarded to two Reading leaders for review and resolution of the scores.

The second exam section is the Concentration section, divided into Part C. This section challenges students to develop a cohesive work centered around a specific theme or concept. Students are required to submit 12 digital images that exemplify their exploration and development of this theme. Alongside the images, a written statement is required to explain the conceptual framework and artistic intentions behind the concentration.

You’ll submit a portfolio of artwork for evaluation at the end of the school year. The hardest part about creating a portfolio is sticking to a routine. Decide on one hour every day that you can dedicate to brainstorming or creating your next piece.

There are no prerequisites for this course, but any experience creating two-dimensional art and design work, in or out of the classroom, will be helpful.
